Short answer: Dutch has two words for "the": de and het. About two in three nouns take de. A few rules always work: plurals always take de, and words ending in -je (diminutives) always take het. For most other words you learn the article together with the word.
1 The rules that always work
| Always de | Always het |
|---|---|
| Every plural: de boeken, de huizen | Every diminutive (-je): het huisje, het meisje |
| Words ending in -heid, -ing, -tie, -teit, -ij: de vrijheid, de woning, de informatie, de universiteit, de bakkerij |
A verb used as a noun: het eten, het lezen |
| Most jobs and people: de bakker, de docent, de man | Languages: het Nederlands, het Engels |
One exception you will meet early: het kind (the child) and het meisje (the girl, a diminutive) are het, although they are people.
2 Patterns that help (most of the time)
Words that start with ge-, be-, ver- or ont- are often het: het gesprek, het begin, het verhaal, het ontbijt. Words ending in -um, -ment and -isme are mostly het: het museum, het document, het toerisme. These are patterns, not rules: there are exceptions, such as de gedachte.
3 Why it matters: the words around it change
| de word | het word | |
|---|---|---|
| this / that | deze / die stoel | dit / dat huis |
| with "a" | een grote stoel | een groot huis |
| with "the" | de grote stoel | het grote huis |
So een groot huis but het grote huis: the adjective gets no -e only with een and a het word.
4 Tricks from our teachers
- Learn every new noun with its article, never alone: not "huis", but "het huis".
- Don't know? Say de: you are right about two times in three.
- Stuck in a sentence? Use the plural or the diminutive: de huizen or het huisje are always right.
Tip: Dutch people rarely make mistakes with de and het, but they understand you perfectly when you do. Nobody will misunderstand de huis; it just sounds foreign. So don't let it stop you from speaking.
Partner tip Make it a kitchen habit. While cooking, the partner holds something up and asks: de of het? The learner answers with the whole thing, de pan, het mes, and the partner says it once more, the right way, without comment. Five things a night is plenty: the words of your own kitchen stick best.
Test yourself
De or het: ___ meisje?
Het meisje. It ends in -je, and every diminutive is a het word, even when it is a person.
De or het: ___ woning?
De woning. Words ending in -ing always take de.
Een groot or een grote: een ___ huis?
Een groot huis. With een and a het word, the adjective gets no -e.
Even the Dutch do not agree on every word: is it de or het WhatsApp? Do not wait for them to settle it before you start speaking.
