Dutch prepositions: op, onder, aan and the rest

Where are your keys? Op de tafel, in je jas, onder de bank. The little words that say where something is are called prepositions; in Dutch they are voorzetsels. Most are easy, a few behave differently from English.

Short answer: op is on (touching), boven is above (not touching), onder under, in in, naast next to, tussen between, achter behind, voor in front of and tegen against. Watch out for aan: a picture hangs aan de muur, and you sit aan tafel.

1 Nine little words

DutchEnglishExample
oponDe sleutels liggen op de tafel.
bovenaboveDe lamp hangt boven de tafel.
onderunderDe kat slaapt onder de tafel.
ininMijn telefoon zit in mijn tas.

Tip: voor is in front of, never "for" here. Ik wacht voor het station means you are standing outside, at the front of the station.

2 Op or aan?

English says "on the wall", Dutch says aan de muur: what hangs from something or is fixed to its side is aan. Op is for lying on top. So het schilderij hangt aan de muur, but de vaas staat op de kast. And at the table with a meal you sit aan tafel.

3 In or op a place?

For a town, a country and most buildings you go inside, it is in: in Den Haag, in de winkel. For a few places Dutch simply says op, and you learn them as a set: op het station, op school, op je werk, op kantoor, op straat.

The Dutch put a lot on: op school, op kantoor, op vakantie. Nobody is standing on the roof of the school. It just sounds Dutch.

Partner tip Play hide-and-seek with the keys. The partner hides something small, and the learner asks: Ligt het op de kast? Onder de bank? The partner only answers ja or nee. Then swap: the learner hides and the partner asks. Find the keys again afterwards; you will need them.

Test yourself

The picture hangs ___ the wall. (op or aan?)

aan: het schilderij hangt aan de muur.

"I am at work." How do you say it?

Ik ben op mijn werk. A place you learn with op.
