Linda Colleague at the office

I'm Linda and I work at the office, at the desk next to Carlos. They're renovating the office at the moment, and every day we get an email. Mistakes were made, it says. But by whom? It never says! That's how the passive works: you hear what happens, but not who does it. So I simply ask. I always want to know everything. Just ask Carlos.

Carlos Linda's colleague

I'm Carlos. I haven't lived in the Netherlands for very long, and I try really hard. I'm always right on time, except that one Monday. Linda still asks why. My Dutch is going well, but sometimes I say something other than I mean. At Linda's birthday I said: ik ben koud. Everyone laughed. Now I say: ik heb het koud. I learn the most from my mistakes, so I learn a lot.

Bo Your guide at TaalTaal

I'm Bo, your guide at TaalTaal. I'm small and pink, and I never sit still. I sit on the table, under the table or behind the cupboard, and you say where I am. That's how you learn the prepositions. And now I'm moving house as well. My new room is empty and I have lots of boxes. Mia helps me, and I hang up the clock. Ophangen is a separable verb, says Ans. I say: above all it's heavy! Will you help me too?

Mia Bo's girlfriend, from England

I'm Mia and I'm from England. I've lived in the Netherlands for years, and my Dutch is really good now. But the beginning was hard! A friend said: see you at half drie. In English half three means half past three, so I came an hour late. Tijs still laughs about it. Everyone makes mistakes, that's part of it. I'm Bo's girlfriend, and on Fridays we go to the café together.

Tijs TaalTaal's clock

Tick tock! I'm Tijs, TaalTaal's clock. I hang on the wall and I see everyone come in. The lessons start on time, because I see to that. In Dutch half drie is half an hour before three o'clock, so two thirty. Many people find that strange. Kwart over, tien voor half: I'll teach you all of it. You may turn my hands yourself, I don't mind. I'm never fast and never slow.

Ans The neighbour, who reads everything out

I'm Ans and I've lived next door to TaalTaal for a long time. Through the wall I hear the lessons: good morning, what's your name, I'm from Poland. I like that. That's why I now read out everything you practise here: calmly and clearly, and you say it after me. I also help Carlos with his email to the landlord. One wrong word, and it says something quite different! And the other day a parcel for Alex came to my door.

Alex The new neighbour

Nu drinken we soms samen koffie.

I'm Alex, and I've just moved house. My parcel was delivered to the neighbour, so I had to ring Ans's bell. I was nervous. Do I say u or je? I said u, and she said: just say je! Now we sometimes have coffee together. That's how you learn Dutch: simply at the door. Do you know your neighbours yet?
